Also, what about regulations? does the government restrict how you can build your house on your land?

    Good videos and good advice.

I highly recommend watching Alone in the Wilderness, the story of Dick Proenneke building a cabin in the wilderness using only basic hand tools. Dick, at the age of 50, left civilization and headed up to Alaska where he lived for the next 30 years.

Anyway, Alone in the Wilderness has some incredible footage and fantastic examples of craftsmanship and simplicity in building a very small log cabin. Most of the materials he used were free as well.

Someone should try to build these all over Detroit, tear down those nasty homes down and replace them with these.

@solarcabin I guess the hubby felt bad about last night (I did, too), so he presented me with a brand-new multimeter just now. Gotta love him! :)

    It’s from GB Instruments – Model # GDT-190A

As long as the multimeter reads wats, volts, and amps it will work. Mine is just a $10 radioshack cheapo.

Start knocking on farmers doors and see if they know of any land available.

Go to the county websites and look at tax sales and foreclosure properties.

ive tried Ebay, internet sites, and 2 realtors, can’t find off the grid cheap land over here in Jersey, I’m getting desperate enough to start to look for raw land to squat on. think I should ask some farmers?

I’ve tried ebay for NJ, but nothing affordable.. I’m gonna send some emails out today to real estate agents in various counties, maybe somone specializes in rural land, I only want an acre…

  16. solarcabin

I don’t know much about NJ but have you looked on Ebay real estate for land ?

You might try NY as I have seen some good cheap land there and some places still have no building codes.

There are many people in the Tiny House movement who make the claim to being affordable and efficient yet they have the gall to charge up to $1,000 for very simple designs.

Michael Janzen of Tiny House Design once suggested that you should consider writing a Blog with daily commentary to generate a wider audience of prospective builders. You don’t have to give away your tips but I think people in the movement would be very interested in your thoughts.

  24. solarcabin

    Thank you!

Tiny house blog and tiny house designs are good website for ideas. and I have shared my designs there.

I have lived through hard times and watched my parents struggle raising 9 kids through a depression so my goal is to help people build inexpensive houses they can afford to live in!

  25. rosterchange

Thanks for the info. Your name is mentioned quite frequently in the comments section of the Tiny House Blog and Tiny House Design.

In this economic mess, people really value proven ideas and affordable solutions. This is what separates you from others. Your ideas are workable and realistic.
