See also hyperblimp dot com. This vehicle runs on sunlight, and thus can fly as long as the sun shines (which, of course, it always does above the clouds). You can see the panels inside (see hyperblimp.com for more info). It's made it with off-the-shelf materials, for about $1000. Location: Sugarhouse Park, Utah, June '06. (Pat. Pend.) If an elementary school teacher like myself can make this happen, with panels that are less than 6% efficient, it is worth contemplating what our country could have done by now if we'd made the effort. But as they say, better late than never.

It’s been done. Search for “Hindenburg” (Hint: use helium this time.)
I was gonna say dildo but…..yeah…..let’s just leave it at that…..LMFAO xD
looks like a big flying weener.. but what an awesome rc.. can u really run it all day?
Somthing like this on a large scale could be used to move cargo around the world for cheap!!!
Neat idea! Lots of potential!
@brockly12345 sell em at red5 for only £12
they sell these at Hawkins bizarre for £12.99
Watch out for the kid with the slingshot!
Excellent idea though.
having those as a source for solar power after some time of development would be so beneficial concerning the energy crisis we are facing… besides, it is far more practical than fossil fuels which also does more negative effects to our planet…
Brilliant concept.
Would this scale up to full size or would weight of solar panels be a problem??
Thanks for clearing that up. I am also about to undertake a project to build an airship powered by solar panels. Do you have any advice? How did you ascend/descend?
Don’t fly. This is a small prototype, showing that off-the-shelf solar can move an airship quite easily. This is running on 25 watts only, with 6% efficient panels (three years ago). The idea is to go larger with better panels and get greater speeds.
What do you do when there are strong winds?
Increasing speed will deal with winds. We now do about 40 with batteries, and could match that with higher end solar. Helium is expensive, a fossil fuel tied to petroleum fields. Hydrogen could be used with proper precautions and more development. Small ships use little gas, however.
Amazing. My biggest worry about airships is 1: They must be shocking to fly in a strong wind, & 2; The gas would be expensive woudnt it? Also how do you asend & decend this model so well, I thought you had to pump the gas in & out thus loosing some all the time.
where can I buy one?
how would flying that be fun. no offense but if you think about it. its hella slow
This is a uav just smaller quieter and less expensive. They already have small RC planes that they fly with a laptop. I can see the value of a quiet lighter than air RC craft use 3 and you can triangulate the exact location of shots fired to respond exactly where it is needed.
Ground bots? What the hell are you on about?
I was joking – as if they’d ever use this instead of a UAV?
Helium is inert will not combust most comon use to insure there are no leaks since the gas is so compact it will escape through the smallest of seams. They use helium detectors and find any cracks. Use to haul the stuff in bulk. As for the use on the battle ground I would not be too concerned with the mild cost of these A they will drift slowly to the ground B the enemy gave his location when he fired on this thing C now send in the ground bots. This tech is so cheap compared to an injured man.
Pretty much – what’s the first thing a terrorist is going to do when he sees an expensive american military camera tied to a condom full of explosive gas?
Remember that most of his day is occupied with shooting an AK-47 up in the air – it wouldn’t take that much effort for him to entertain himself.
:D
lol
lol
Then I can shoot it down with my super Jiz.
Be careful what you ask for cdltpx…it might just take pictures of you wanking in the backyard!
